A car from 2006 that still looks modern...
Greetings Opponauts! Welcome to “Car Cazar” a new “feature” where I give you a budget and make up a scenario and you find a vehicle that fits the bill.
Alright let’s get down to business, there’s a man in his late 50s who’s just retired. He’s looking to cast off his groggy Honda Accord and get something sporty. It must be less than 45k be reliable enough do be driven a high amount and should keep its value at least a tiny bit. It should be comfortable enough to be daily driven. It should have a compliant ride as he’s got a bad back. What ya got?

Isn’t the stereotypical answer the Corvette?

If he’s made enough cash to retire in his 50s, why is his budget so damn low?

I bet he could buy 3 or 4 C5 Corvettes for 45k. Or maybe a C6, and a couple C5s.

because he is a responsible adult who won’t throw his retirement away on a toy. So he will buy a Camry.

That’s why his budget is so low. He’s got to hang on to as much money as possible.

17 Lincoln MKZ.
400 hp 400 torque 3.0 V6 Twin Turbo AWD
Personally I would option mine in Midnight Sapphire with the Sonata Spin Aluminum Trim Package.
$41,735
Room for him to add a few options if he would like. For example he could add the 14 speaker Revel sound system and still be in the 42's. Then you of course need the heated steering wheel that has to come with the Climate Package - still in the 43's.
MKZ is a great vehicle for that budget if you’re buying new.

The key is to die as fast as possible so you work less overall.

Do what all other guys do at his age looking for something sporty. Get a used Corvette or 911. He could swing a nice C6 GS that should have a pretty stable depreciation curve, or a really nice 997.1 Carrera S. Used Porsche prices are very stable and demand is strong.

Except he said it needs to hold its value. That Lincoln is gonna be worth a pack of gum and a used Kleenex in 2-3 years ;-).

In all honesty though 2-3 year old lincoln MKZ’s with AWD and around 30-40k miles around here are selling somewhere about 25k. It’s a hard comparison though because this awesome new engine wasn’t available and the facelift changes a lot.

Obvious answer is obvious.Old men cann’t slide into a mustang, and the new Camaro looks too edgy.

A Jaguar XE 25t Prestige. Add metallic paint, and Adaptive Dynamics. Skip the ventilated seats (bundled in a $2k option pack) and the adaptive xenons (bundled in the $2400 Vision Pack) and you have a sporty yet compliant car that will hold value pretty much as well as any other European competitor. Jag reliability is up big time, although the new infotainment is a bit of a PITA.

Mint R129, and $25-30k change for hookers/golf. The car is likely going to start appreciating soon too. And he can pretend that he’s always been that understated rich guy instead of a dude who just traded in his Honda for a 20 year old Mercedes.

Perhaps a lightly used CTS-V?
Or if you wanted to go a slightly
more exotic route...
If I had $45k, I’d buy it right now. I love the Evora so much.

Nice, I like these challenges.
Was going to choose a Jag but it’s not reliable
Next choice was the Phaeton, but it doesn’t keep its value.
Then I remembered a car which is unreliable and depreciates unreasonably…
…but it’s proper comfy, so it’s my choice.
Citroën C6. Beats a C6 Corvette alright.
